Internet Radio

Internet Radio

North Manchester (Threes a crowd). We listened to this radio station on the internet and it was like a podcast, we listened to a 7 - 9(pm) so we could play, pause, stop it. This station is a no commercial / responsabilities radio.

This station plays remix's, dance music so the songs blend in with eachother. It is 95% audio(music) and 5%(speech). The only time the presenter spoke was to introduce a song or to say their opinion on it. The presenter spoke informal, but used slang and spoke common to fit their target audience.

No commercials / responsabilities, so no adverts or news reports are played, but they do give shout out's off social networking sites just like other radio stations.

I don't mind this radio station but this was the only time i have listened to it. I do like some of the music but its niche, for people that like dance music and can listen to it constantly. Commercial and Public service radio's are broadcasted to a wide rang audience, whereas internet radio isn't. This is why it does fit the target audience, people who want to listen to this kind of music will look for radio stations like this.

Public Service Radio

BBC Radio 1

Between 3 - 4 o'clock we listened to this radio station, Scott Mills is the presenter at this time week days. To understand how presenters work on the radio we listened to the radio for an hour to analyse it's content. Some of the things we were listening for was what music type of music they played, how many songs they played (until an promotion / throughout the whole show), how many promotions / jingles were played during the hour, also what they talk about.

Although this radio station is a contemporary hit radio, is also does play the odd recurrent song.

Throughout the show 12 songs were played, news reports were played every half hour. 60 - 40% is the audio(music) to speech percentage. Different kinds of music is played by the different presenters to please the target audience of 15 - 29. They talk about the events going on in the year, and what competitions the audience can win. Also when they introduce new songs, they will talk about the artists (who they are, what songs they have released before, how long they have been producing music for and what else they have done) and their opinions on the songs. If they have time they will read out peoples comments off social networking sites.

When Scott Mills show started he introduced himself by his name and also what station it was, he spoke in an informal way and was enthusiasic towards the audience. He explains what is going to happen throughou his show, and for the rest of the day / week. He then lets you know the first few songs that are coming up, then introduces the song that he is about to play. Every half an hour the news update comes on talking about the latest news and sports. This station is adult conemporary station, this show played mostly pop / chart and urban music to satisfy the audience.

Jingles / station ID get played after or before songs and adverts. Although BBC Radio don't advertise because they ar a public radio, they promote things such as different shows and competitions. In Scott Mills show there was 3 promotions.

I do listen to BBC Radio 1 myself, i think it is one of the bes radio stations there is so i wouldn't change anything about it. The presenters are informal, jokey and enthusiastic, suitable for the target audience.

Commercial Radio

Capital Radio

Bewtween 11 - 12 we listened to this radio station, to find out how this differs from other radios. Unlike the other radios i have spoke about, Capital is a contemporary hit radio (CHR, Contemporary Hits, Hit List, Current Hits, Hit Music, Top 40, or Pop Radio) so this station just focuses of pop / chart music.

Just like other radio's, the presenter will introduce themselves; the presenter on the show we listened to was Pandora. The target audience is 15 - 34 so she also spoke in an informative, enthusiastic, jolly way just like Scott Mills. Before she played any songs she spoke about compeitions and prizes the audience can win, after she explains things she mentions the radio ID just to remind everyone what adio station they are listening to. 12 ID / jingles were played during her show.

After Pandora spoke about everthing she needed to, she told the audience what songs are coming up then introduced the first song. All together an average of 19 songs were played, 60% - 40%  is the percentage of audio(music) to speech played. If any of the songs are new, she will give information about the song and artist.

Because this is a commercial radio, the do play adverts and about 18 adverts were played during the whole hour, this took up about 9 minutes of the show. The news was played every half hour (like public service radios) they spoke about the latest news, sport and weather.

I do sometimes listen to capital radio, but i prefer BBC Radio 1 because it is a public service radio and has no adverts. I think commercial radios play too many adverts.

Smooth Radio

Again, we listened to Smooth Radio 3 - 4. This radio station is easy listening, it plays calm music.

The presenter had a calm tone to his voice he was mature, but also chatty. He introduced himself at the start of the show and spoke abou what was coming up next just like other radio stations. At the end of his show he told the audience who was coming up next and what was going to happen in their show.

More ID / jingles and adverts were played than on Capital, 16 ID / jingles, 22 adverts. Adverts last about 30 seconds each, so 22 adverts would have took up 11 - 12 miuntes of the whole show. Also less music was played, only 12 where as capital played 19 songs. Unlike the other radio stations, the news was played twice in the hour and spoke more about travel and traffic than other stations to.

I don't really listen to Smooh Radio because i don't like th music they play, the target audience is 25 - 45, so i listen to radio stations that have the target audience 14 +.

In-store Radio

            Subway Radio

Subway Radio was the last radio we listened to. Like the others, we listened to this radio station for an hour 9:30am - 10:00am.

When we came into subway the radio was easy listening, but throughout the hour there was a mixture from easy listening, to adult contemporary and recurrent. They played a mixture of music to please the different types (pop, rock, indie) of people in the audience. 14 songs were played.

The hour we was in subway nothing but music was played, but in the past when i have been in subway i have heard adverts promoting products and offers and also jobs that are available in the fast food restaurant.

I think there should be more promoting and speaking during hours, it would also benefit the shop because people will be more aware of the deals / offers.
